High Court bench set up to settle appeals, death references

The Chief Justice on Monday assigned a High Court bench to dispose of the death references of those convicted for murdering madrassah student Nusrat Jahan Rafi on April 6, 2019.   

SM Sirajuddoula, the principal of Sonagazi Senior Islamia Fazil Madrassah, and 15 others have been sentenced to death for killing Nusrat by setting fire to her.

The Chief Justice also assigned the bench of Justice Soumendra Sarker and Justice Shahed Nuruddin to dispose of the convicts’ appeals against the death sentences on a priority basis.

Court officials told New Age that the bench would fix a date for starting the hearing on the death references and the appeals.

On October 29, 2019, the High Court received the death references.

The HC placed the references before the Chief Justice for his consent to make the paper-book on a priority basis to start the hearing. 

On October 24, 2019, the Feni Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed the death sentences to Sirajuddoula and 15 others.

The 15 others included Sonagazi thana Awami League’s former president Ruhul Amin and Sonagazi municipal town’s former AL joint general secretary and its Ward-4 councillor Maksud Alam alias Maksud.

The court also ordered Tk one lakh fine on each, ordering the district magistrate that the money should be given to the victim’s family.

The Feni tribunal judge, Mamunur Rashid, pronounced the verdict after hearing the murder case for 62 workdays.
