At least 52 students of Rajshahi University population science and human resource department fell sick on Friday, the third day of their hunger strike observed demanding renaming of their department Applied Statistics.

The students went on fast unto death at 10:00am on Wednesday as part of their movement that started on January 19 when the students began class-and-examination boycott programmes.

They demanded inclusion of their subject code into Public Service Commission data, alleging that they could not apply for the government service as the PSC did not provide any specific subject code for the department.

The students went for fast to death on Wednesday after the PSC authorities revealed their inability to provide any code for the subject since the subject was only at Rajshahi University available.

Sohag Hossain, a Master’s student of the department told New Age that the course was 95 per cent similar to applied statistics department courses.

He said that a total of 52 students fell sick during the strike while two were admitted in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital since their health conditions were critical.

He said that 50 students again joined the strike after taking primary treatment at the hospital while 10 were administered intravenous saline.

Meanwhile, RU vice-chancellor M Abdus Sobhan, pro-vice chancellors Ananda Kumar Saha and Chowdhury M Zakaria visited the demonstrating students and asked them to postpone the strike.

However, the students said that they would continue their strike until their demand is met.

The VC told New Age that renaming a department is a long process. ‘The VC or any other individual does not hold the authority to change a department’s name overnight. We will discuss the matter Monday’, he added.
