Theatre troupe Aranyak Natyadal lifted the curtain on its six-day festival marking thespian Mamunur Rashid’s 18th birthday at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Thursday.
The festival titled ‘Droho Daho Swapner Natya Ayojon’ is featuring plays, discussions, cultural performances and others at different venues of the academy.
Abul Kashem Mohammad Mamunur Rashid Khan was born on a leap day on February 29, 1948 as a result his birthday comes once in every four years.
The thespian will turn 72 and celebrate his 18th birthday on February 29.
Professor Hayat Mahmud, Indian critic Samik Bandyopadhyay and Workers Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon, among others, were present at the festival’s inaugural ceremony, which was held at Nandan Mancha of the academy.
‘Mamunur Rashid has made a significant contribution to the theatre performed in Bangla language. He is not only popular in Bangladesh but also has fan following in West Bengal, India. You are lucky that he was born in this land,’ said Samik Bandyopadhyay.
‘I am celebrating my 18th birthday. There is still a lot of work to be done. I want to work harder in the coming days. I still have dreams which I want to accomplish,’ said Mamunur Rashid.
Following which, dance artiste Ivan Shahriar Shohag and his troupe entertained the audience by presenting colourful dance recital.
Besides, singers Bulbul Islam, Anima Roy and Sharmin Sathi Islam rendered songs and Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan presented sarod recital at Music and Dance Centre of the academy on the opening day.
A discussion titled ‘Natyacharcha, Shad Naki Shwapno,’ was held at 10:00am at Studio Theatre Hall on Friday where Samik Bandyopadhyay delivered the key-note speech.
Besides, Mamunur Rashid spoke on his journey at a discussion titled ‘Jey Bhabe Bere Uthi’ at the same venue at 3:30pm.
Young Star Theatre, Parbatipur staged its play ‘Rastro Bonam’ at National Theatre Hall and Aranyak Natyadal staged ‘Rarang’ at Experimental Hall.
Obhinoy Shilpi Shongho will hold a meeting at 10:00am at Studio Theatre Hall today and a discussion titled ‘Mamunur Rashid er Natyabhabhona O Amader Natya Charcha’ will be held at the same venue at 4:30pm where Syed Manzoorul Islam will attend as key-note speaker.
A discussion titled ‘Jiban O Shilper Mamunur Rashid’ will be held at National Theatre Hall at 6:30pm where thespians Ramendu Majumdar, Nasiruddin Yousuff and Liaquat Ali Lucky will attend as discussants.
Following which, Aranyak Natyadal will premiere its new production titled ‘Kohe Facebook’ at the venue. The troupe will stage a second show of the play at the same venue on March 1. Bangla Theatre will stage Cher Cycle on March 2 and the festival will end on March 3 with show of Aranyak Natyadal’s ‘Sangkranti’.
