Indian Bharatnatyam dancer Nartaki Nataraj, the first trans woman to receive the Padma Shri Award, will perform at the main auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum in Shahbagh tonight, says a press release.
Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. It is awarded by the government of India, every year on India’s Republic Day.
Nataraj received the award for her exceptional performance and achievement in culture (dance) in 2019.
Besides, she received honorary doctorate from Tanjavur Thanthai Periyar Maniammai University in 2016.
Bandhu Social Welfare Society has organised the programme to accord reception to Nartaki Nataraj.
Nataraj has previously participated in many international dance events in India, United Kingdom, United States of America and many other countries.
