District Shilpakala Academy, Sylhet has organised a five-day book fair and cultural festival marking Shaheed Dibash and International Mother Language Day on its premises.
The event, which has been organised for the second year in row, aims to promote reading and cultural practices among the masses.
The event was inaugurated on the academy premises at Purba Shahi Eidgah in the city on Tuesday. It has been dedicated to country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Former principal of Sylhet Madan Mohan College Abul Fateh Fattah, freedom fighter Bhabatosh Barman Roy, poet Toshar Kar, Sylhet Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Faysal Mahmud, cultural activist AK Sheram and Sammilita Sangskritik Jote Sylhet general secretary Gautam Chakrabarty, among others, spoke at the inaugural ceremony, presided over by district cultural officer Asit Baran Dash Gupta.
Activists of Sylhet-based cultural troupes Sylhet Nrittalaya, Shrihatta Lalitakala Academy and Anirban Shilpi Sangathan performed at the event on the opening day. They presented group dance recitals, recitation and others.
A total of 14 publishers based in Dhaka, Sylhet and Narayanganj are participating in the book fair.
The cultural festival and book fair will run till February 29. It will remain open from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
