A woman died in the police custody in Gazipur city after she was arrested Tuesday evening.
The family of the 40-year-old dead woman, Yasmin Begum, alleged that she was tortured to death.
The police denied the allegation and claimed that the woman—captured with 100 pieces of yaba tablets during a raid on her house in Gazipur—died from her cardiac problem.
The victim’s son Arafat Rahman Zisan said that she was tortured and taken to the police station and later, he was asked to visit the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, where they found the body.
The Gazipur Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Manjur Rahman said that she was taken to the Detective Branch office after her husband Abdul Hay had escaped during the drugs raid.
The hospital physician Rafikul Islam said that she was brought with chest pain at about 10:10am on Tuesday and, later, she died when preparations were underway to send her to Dhaka.
The Gazipur Metropolitan Police commissioner Anwar Hossain said that a three-member committee headed by additional commissioner Azad Miah was formed and tasked to submit their report within seven days.
