Jashore police on Monday night in a raid arrested two people for their alleged involvement in extortion.
The arrested are - Mohammad Ali, 21, of Minkikandi village of Durgapur in Netrokona, who is now living in Khitibdia of Jashore, and Md Ibrahim, 20, of Kamarprotap village under Narail sadar upazila.
The duo was arrested form a place on Jashore-Jhenaidah highway, said a press release issued by the media wing of the district police.
The press release said that Mohammad Ali was a Facebook friend of a young girl, who is now studying in China. Based on the friendship, the duo demanded Tk 6,00,000 from the girl’s father, otherwise, they threatened to upload the fabricated nude photographs of his daughter on Facebook using her profile photographs, it added.
The father then informed it to the police and meanwhile, he gave Tk 1,00,000 to the duo. After handing over the money, police raided and arrested the duo along with the money, the release said.
A case was lodged with Kotwali police station in this connection.
Earlier, Detective Branch of police arrested seven suspected extortionists and recovered Tk 30,000 from their possession raiding an office at Prembagh village under Abhaynagar upazila in Jashore on Sunday night, said Maruf Ahmed, officer-in-charge, Jashore DB police.
The DB official told New Age that they arrested Syed Mostafizur Rahman Rana, 40, assistant teacher of Banogram Secondary School, who used to introduce himself as the president of Bangabandhu Smriti Parishad, Azad Rahman, 42, Syed Wahidul Islam Mintu, 40, Md Pintu, 35, Ziar Mollah, 35, and Al Amin Hossain, 23, all of Prembagh village under Abhaynagar upazila in Jashore and Habibur Rahman, 58, of Char Baira village under Gopalganj sadar upazila.
Police also recovered Tk 30,000, which was extorted from Amir Hossain Emon, manager of Alvee Traders of Narayanganj. Alvee Traders had been supplying fuel to Toma Construction for a long.
