Acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam alleged that he was tortured by police as they detained him on Sunday night for allegedly running propaganda against the government and spreading rumours. ‘I was hit. My blood stained Punjabi was washed and I was made wear it again,’ Shahidul told reporters as he was taken to the court on Monday. A metropolitan magistrate granted seven days of police remand for Shahidul after he was produced before his court by the detective branch of police. Colleagues and family members said about 30-35 men in plain clothes forced photographer Shahidul into a car from his Dhanmondi home on Sunday, hours after his comments were broadcast by the Qatar-based Al Jazeera television channel.
