Workers of state-run Rangpur Sugar Mills and the sugarcane farmers in the mill zone in Gaibandha on Saturday morning went on a strike demanding to recover the land of the mill from illegal occupation.

The workers in association with the farmers took position at Mahimaganj railway station in Gobindaganj of the district and blocked the rail tracks around 8:30am, halting the train communication between Rangpur and Dhaka.

Abdul Matin, president of Rangpur sugar mills workers union, said a group of local people grabbed some 500 acres of lands of the sugar mill illegally three months back.

As a result, the production of sugarcane as well as sugar has been hampered, he added.
