Saif, Imrul pile pressure on Test players

Saif Hassan churned out a brilliant double hundred while Imrul Kayes carried on his form with a 93 as the duo kept piling pressure on the current national Test team batters on the second day of their respective National Cricket League second round matches on Friday.  

Saif remained unbeaten on 220 off 329 balls as Dhaka division posted 556-8d in their first innings before reducing Rangpur division to 71-2 at stumps in Chattogram.

In Khulna, the hosts rode on Imrul’s knock to reach 227-6 in their first innings, still trailing Rajshahi division by 34-run at the Shiekh Abu Naser Stadium.

Zakir Hasan and Jaker Ali made an identical 71 to help Sylhet division post 319 in their first innings despite Abu Hider’s claiming 5-55 for Dhaka Metro in Bogura.

At Fatullah, Chattogram division posted 356 in their first innings with Mahidul Islam hitting 91 before reducing Barishal division to 104-4 in their first innings at stumps of the second day’s play.

Dhaka v Rangpur

Saif, who left the field retire hurt on 120 in the first day, returned to the crease after overnight batsman Sumon Khan (24) departed with the score on 349-5, after Dhaka resumed play on 314-4.

After the remaining overnight batsman Shuvagata Hom’s (17) departure in the same over off Sanjit Saha (3-89), Saif formed a hundred and a fifty-run stands for the next two wickets with Nadif Chowdhury (61) and Joyraz Shiek (26) to take their score to 500.

Saif then formed another fifty-plus stand with Nazmul Islam (18 not out) for the ninth wicket to complete his second double ton in first-class cricket which included 19 fours and four sixes and Dhaka promptly declared their innings.

In reply, Liton Das remained unbeaten on 51 off 64 balls as Rangpur ended the day trailing Dhaka still by 485 runs.

Rajshahi v Khulna

Replying to Rajshahi’s first innings score of 261, Khulna lost Soumya Sarkar for a duck before Imrul steadied the innings with 75 and 85-run stands with Anamul Haque (34) and Tushar Imran (43) respectively.

Imrul, who made an unbeaten 202 in the first round against Rangpur, missed out on a hundred for seven runs after Nazmul Hossain ran him out with the score on 167-3.

Khulna then lost their way, losing next three wickets for 41 runs to be reduced at 208-6.

Nurul Hasan (35) and Abdur Razzak (seven) remained unbeaten at stumps as they were still trailing by 53 runs against Rajshahi.

Farhad Reza and Shafiul Islam claimed two-wicket each for Rajshahi.

Metro v Sylhet

Resuming play on 5-1, still trailing Metro by 241-run in the first innings, four Sylhet batsmen, Zakir, Jaker, Towfiq Khan (61) and Alok Kapali (54) struck fifties to help them wipe out their deficit.

Sylhet, however, had to settle for a 73-run lead after losing their remaining five-wicket for 37-run.

Metro finished the day on 9-0 with Mohammad Naim (eight) and Rakin Ahmed (one) not out, still trailing Sylhet by 64 runs.

Chattogram v Barishal

Resuming on 261-4, Chattogram added 95-run on the second day to post a 350-plus score in their first innings.

In reply, Rafsan Al Mahmud made 49 but Barishal lost three wickets latter on the day to end the day trailing Chattogram by 252 runs.
