Six suspected robbers killed in ‘gunfights’

At least six people were killed in three ‘gunfights’ in Sunderbans of Khulna, Habiganj and Lakshmipur on Tuesday.

Of them, four suspected forest robbers were killed a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion at Kairar Khal of Sunderban west division in Kaira of Khulna, a suspected robber was killed in ‘gunfight’ with police at Surabai in Habiganj, and a suspected criminal was killed in another ‘gunfight’ between two groups of alleged criminals at Bakultala in Lakshmipur, reports received from the districts said.

In the Sunderbans, the deceased were Aminur alias Monirul, 33, of Phultala in Khulna, Md Akhtarul Islam, 37, of Diglarait in Ashashuni of Satkhira, Samish Saha, 26, of Jaipror in Morelganj of Bagerhat, and Md Rafiqul Islam, 27, of Tentultalar char in Kaira of Khulna.

RAB officials said among the dead, Aminur was the ringleader of the forest robber gang named after him.

RAB 6 special company commander Tofazzel Hossain said they, on information that a forest robber gang was staying in a boat at Kairar Khal, a RAB team conducted a raid there and asked the suspected robbers to surrender at about 6:15am. But the robbers ran into the forest and opened fire on the RAB members, forcing them to retaliate with gunshots firing that triggered a ‘gunfight’, he said.

As the ‘gunfight’ ended after about 10 minutes, they searched the area and found four bullet-hit robbers and took them to Kaira Upazila Health Complex, he added.

He said they also seized three locally-made guns, 25 cartridges and the boat used by the suspects from the spot.

Kaira Upazila Health Complex’s statistics officer Md Shafiqul Islam said four bullet-hit people were brought dead to the hospital at about 10:15am.

In Habiganj, the alleged ringleader of a robber gang, Kudrat Ali, 40, son of Omar Ali of Dariapur in Sadar upazila and named in at least 13 cases was killed in a gunfight with police at Surabai at about 3:00am on Tuesday.

Habiganj superintendent of police Md Rabiul Islam said a joint team of detectives and Sayestaganj police raided Suraboi area to arrest suspected robbers when robbers opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back that triggered the gunfight.

Police seized a locally-made pipe gun, six cartridges, two daggers and rods from the spot, he said.

New Age Correspondent in Lakshmipur, quoting Chandraganj police station officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad, reported that a crime suspect, Ilias, 35, of Uttar Magura under Lakshmipur sadar was killed in a gunfight between two groups of criminals at Bakultala early Tuesday.

Chandraganj police station officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad said a team of police, on hearing sounds of gunshots, rushed the spot, rescued bullet-hit Ilias and took him to Lakshmipur General Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
