The ruling Awami League has suspended Sirajganj district AL organising secretary Halimul Haque Miru, also the Shahzadpur municipal mayor, and Shahzadpur upazila AL member KM Nasir Uddin from the party.
The suspensions came following recommendation made by Shahzadpur upazila AL on Sunday for their alleged involvement in the killing of Bangla daily Samakal correspondent Abdul Hakim Shimul.
Sirajganj district unit Awami League vice-president KM Hossen Ali said, ‘We received a letter on Wednesday from that party headquarter that suspended both of them from the party.’
The letter, however, was signed by AL office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap on February 5, he said.
The two were also asked to explain the allegation brought against them in 15 days, Hossen said.
Copies of the suspension letter were also sent to Sirajganj district unit Awami League president and general secretary along with AL joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanok and organising secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, he added.
Police arrested Halimul as prime suspect in the killing of journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul on Sunday evening at Shyamali in Dhaka.
Halimul landed in jail on Monday after police produced him before a Sirajganj court on charge of killing journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul.
