Passenger rights activists on Saturday sought immediate government interventions to prevent charging extra for advance tickets in different transports that forces low income group people to avail unfit and goods-laden vehicles during Eid journeys.
They also asked the authorities to stop selling advance tickets in black markets.
The Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh organised an evaluation meeting in the capital after observing different bus terminals, Sadarghat launch terminal, railway stations and booking situation of plane tickets for past few days in Dhaka.
Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of the association, alleged at the meeting that people were paying extra for advance tickets of buses, launches and airplanes ahead of Eid.
Advance train tickets were being sold in black markets, he alleged.
If the authorities fail to prevent charging extra fares and selling of tickets in black markets then they would be unable to stop poor people from getting on unfit vehicles and goods-laden vehicles, he said.
He said that number of fatal accidents would increase for this reason.
Poor people were compelled to get in fitness defying vehicles, roofs of buses, trucks, trains and launches by risking their lives because of cheaper fare and crisis of public transports, he said.
Every year Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority formed monitoring teams but people forced to purchase tickets of bus, launch and plane at higher prices, Mozammel alleged.
He said the authorities including Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection conducted drives at different bus terminals while there were no countrywide actions yet.
This year Eid time travels of people could be comfortable as the condition of roads were good than other years, new launches and trains were included and if the authorities manage these all properly, he added.
The activists urged the authorities concerned to take immediate actions for checking the menace created by transport operators by collecting extra fare.
