The students of Islamic University staged demonstration on the campus in Kushtia on Tuesday, demanding reduction of fees in different sectors of the university.
Around five hundred students of different departments laid a siege to the university’s administrative building and chanted slogans after boycotting their regular classes and examinations around 11:00am.
Five of the protesters started hunger strike till death to press home their demand to reduce extended fees in the name of academic and administrative development of the university.
One of the protesters, Nourin Nusrat, a second-year student of law department, has been taken to IU Central Hospital as her health condition deteriorated.
The university student adviser along with the proctorial body rushed to the spot and tried to keep the situation under control but failed to calm down the students.
Later, the students locked up the university’s main entrance around 2:00pm.
No university bus, car, motorcycle and, even, rickshaw-van could not go outside during their agitation.
The students were continuing their demonstration till filing of this report at 5:00pm.
Agitating students said that they would continue demonstration boycotting their classes and examinations until their demand was met.
One of the agitating students told New Age that the university authorities were increasing the admission fees every year without any valid reason. The students would not accept that anymore, he added.
The university authorities have increased session fees, hall fees, examination fees and transport fess from 2017-18 academic sessions.
However, the university pro-vice-chancellor M Shahinoor Rahman said that the students cannot go against the matter which was already settled two years ago. They might have been guided by vested quarters, he added.
Earlier, a group of students of applied science and technology faculty also started their hunger strike in front of MA Wazed Miah Science Building demanding engineering technology degree under their respective faculties.
