A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to Passengers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh secretary general Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury in an extortion case filed with Mirpur police station.
Metropolitan magistrate Md Mazharul Haque passed the order responding to Mojammel’s petition seeking bail that was moved by his lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua.
The bail would not help Mozammel to walk out of jail as the Kafrul police sought court’s permission to show him arrested in a case filed under the explosive substances act.
Hearing the police application is set for Thursday, said Mozammel’s another lawyer Zaydul Islam.
At Tuesday’s hearing Jyotirmoy submitted that his client was innocent and was implicated in the case by the police only to harass him and gag his voice for demanding road safety and protecting the interests of the country’s passengers.
He argued that the plaintiff of the case in the case statement claimed that his client demanded Tk 2 lakh and the plaintiff had provided Tk 10,000 to him but later the plaintiff had admitted to the media that he did not know the accused.
So, he argued, it was a cooked up case and his client, a respected man in the society, was implicated in the case to malign him.
Later, the court granted bail to Mozammel on production of bail bond worth Tk 10,000, court officials said.
Police arrested Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury from his Sanarpar house in Narayanganj on early September 6, two days after the extortion case was filed with Mirpur Police Station.
According to the case statement, complainant Md Dulal alleged that Mozammel, claiming to be a transport leader, demanded Tk two lakh from him, and he gave Mozammel Tk 10,000 in cash in front of Sony Cinema Hall at Mirpur on September 3.
On Monday, Kafrul thana  police filed a petition seeking permission from a Dhaka court to show Mozammel arrested in the Explosive Substances Act that was filed with the Kafrul police station in late February.
