A three-day theatre festival titled ‘Dhaka University Natya Sangsad Natyautsab’ began on Sunday with a show of Kaak Charitra at Teachers-Students Centre of the university.

Artistes of Dhaka University Natya Sangsad staged the play, which has been written by Indian playwright Manoj Mitra and directed by Shuvra Goswami.

The satirical play depicts social anomalies in contemporary society where people are indifferent towards anomalies until they themselves are affected.

Through the symbolic character of a crow, the play shows that people in contemporary society are getting more self-centered and ignoring well-being of others.

Earlier, Dhaka University vice-chancellor Dr M Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the festival, in presence of Dhaka University Natya Sangsad president Sanwarul Haque, general secretary Rafiqul Islam Sabuj and others.

On Monday, drama and dramatics department of Jahangirnagar University staged Selim Al Deen’s popular play Kittankhola. Directed by Ahsan Habib, a graduate of drama and dramatics department of JU, the play portrays lives of rural people, their struggles, sufferings and more. The play takes place at a village fair where people of different professions and social classes come and meet each other.

The play gives a glimpse into the contemporary society where exploitation of the poor and marginalised is rampant.

The festival will end today with a show of Telescope by Indian troupe Anandan Theatre. Telescope has been written by Madhusadan Mukhopaddhay and directed by Sanjib Sarkar.

‘Dhaka University Natya Sangsad has organised the festival for the third consecutive year. We hope to engage university students in theatre through this festival’, said Sanwarul Haque, president of Dhaka University Natya Sangsad.

Besides theatre shows, the festival is also featuring a three-day theatre workshop from September 10-12 for theatre activists and students. Drama department chairman of Chittagong University Shamim Hasan is conducting the workshop.
