Police arrested another member of the bus staff at his home at village Benikushia in Kalihati of Tangail for his alleged involvement in Friday’s gang-rape of a mentally challenged woman in a moving bus in Tangail.
The arrestee was the supervisor of the bus, Md Ershad, 40, of village Benikushia, the police said.
On early Friday, the police said that they had arrested the bus helper, Nazmul, red handed after chasing down the bus from Tangail to Bangabandhu Bridge’s east end.
Nazmul told the court that Ershad and the bus driver Alam Khandakar had raped the woman who was in her twenties.
Bangabandhu Bridge East police officer-in-charge Mosharraf Hossain said that they were trying to arrest the bus driver.
The police produced Ershad before Tangail judicial magistrate Ashiquzzaman, seeking a five-day remand for interrogation in police custody, said Tangail court police inspector Anwarul Islam.
The court later sent Ershad to jail, setting Tuesday for hearing on the remand plea.
The victim, who could not tell her address, was identified on Monday by family members who appeared in court, seeking her custody. The court granted her custody to the family.
The incident took place just a year after law student Zakia Sultana Rupa was killed after rape in another moving bus on the night of August 25 in Modhupur of same the district.
A Tangail court in February this year sentenced four transport workers to death and another person to seven years in prison in the Rupa murder case.
