A mentally challenged woman was raped in a moving bus allegedly by the driver and his two assistants in Tangail early Friday.
Police officials said that they arrested driver’s assistant Nazmul red handed chasing the bus from Tangail to Bangabandhu Bridge east end.
The incident took place after a year of killing of law student Zakia Sultana Rupa after rape in a moving bus in Tangail on August 25, 2017.
Bangabandhu Bridge East police station officer in-charge Mosharraf Hossain said that the rape incident took place when the woman, in her twenties, believed to have mental disability, was on her way from Tangail to Bangabandhu Bridge area early Friday.
The woman, who could tell only her name and her home district of Kushtia, was alone on the bus after other passengers got off, he said.
Hearing the scream of the woman in the bus, police chased the bus and caught Nazmul while two others – driver Alam and another assistant Bishu – managed to flee, Mosharraf said.
A medical examination on Saturday found evidence of rape, said Tangail Sheikh Hasina Medical College Hospital doctor Rehena Parvin.
The woman was now undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Tangail court police inspector Anwarul Islam said that a court sent Nazmul to jail after he was produced before the country Friday afternoon.
A Tangail court in February this year sentenced four transport workers to death and another to seven years in prison for the rape and murder of law student Zakia Sultana Rupa in a moving bus at Modhupur in Tangail on Aug 25, 2017.
