Helper arrested for pushing man off the bus, driver on the run

Police on Saturday arrested a bus helper over the death of Rezaul Karim, who was allegedly pushed off the vehicle and crushed to death on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Chittagong.
Police Bureau of Investigation arrested Md Manik Sarkar, 26, son of Md Mostafa Sarkar of Firozshah area, Akbar Shah Chittagong.
PBI Chittagong Metro Inspector Santosh Kumar Chakma said after arresting him from a house of Hajir Hat area under Ramgar Upazila in Lakshmipur, police brought him to the city.
On August 27, bus driver and helper allegedly pushed off the businessman from the minibus which ran over him following an altercation with the driver’s helper in City Gate area.
The death sparked protests among locals who barricaded the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the area for nearly an hour.
Soon after the incident, people took him to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police had seized the vehicle.
Later that night, owner of the Lusai Paribahan bus Md Shahabuddin went to Akbar Shah Police Station and showed route permit as well as the fitness certificate, said the OC.
On August 28, victim’s uncle Abdur Rahman filed a murder case against the driver Didarul Alam and helper Md Manik Sarkar.
The driver is yet to be arrested.
