A Bangladeshi expatriate in Kuwait and also a Kuwait unit leader of ruling Awami League was stabbed to death by miscreants in Zindabazar area in Sylhet city on Friday night.
The deceased was SM Abdul Ahad, 38, organising secretary of AL Kuwait unit, and son of Nur Miah of village Karimpur Medeni Mahal of Rajnagar upazila in Moulvibazar, the police said.
Local people said that some five to six miscreants attacked Ahad in front of City Centre, a multi-storey shopping mall, at Zindabazar around 10:45pm and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
Kotwali police officer-in-charge Mosharraf Hossain told New Age that local people rescued the victim and took him to Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Quoting the victim’s family, the police officer said that Ahad, also Kuwait unit general secretary of Sylhet Divisional Lekhak Forum, a platform of the writers of Sylhet division, came to Bangladesh on vacation.
He came to the city from Moulvibazar on Thursday to attend a programme of Sylhet unit of Awami League and he was supposed to return his home on Saturday.
‘Identities of the attackers and the reason behind the killing could not be ascertained so far,’ the OC said, adding that the body was handed over to the family on Saturday afternoon after completion of post-mortem examinations.
The family said that they would file a case in this connection, he added.
