Dinajpur mayor held for cheating in weight of VGF rice

Dinajpur municipality mayor Syed Jahangir Alam was arrested on Sunday for cheating in weight of rice meant for the poor under the vulnerable group feeding programme.
A team of Kotwali police arrested the mayor around 11:30am while he was inspecting preparation of Gor-A- Shaheed Eid ground ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Police said that the mayor gave 18.40 kg rice instead of 20kg to each of the clients under the programme.
On the same allegation, the municipality store keeper, Mojibur Rahman Bacchu, was arrested on Saturday, said police.
Dinajpur Sadar upazila project implementation officer Altaf Hossain filed a case with Kotwali police on Saturday night in this regard.
Kotwali police officer-in-charge Redwanur Rahim said that after the arrest, the mayor was produced before a court and police sought a five-day remand for his interrogation.
The arrested mayor, however, claimed that he was a victim of political conspiracy. 
Meanwhile, RU correspondent adds: the local administration seized ten sacks of VGF rice from the house of a sibling of a local Awami League leader at village Sorerhat of Bagha upazila in Rajshahi on Saturday night.
Upazila assistant commissioner (land) Imrul Kayes told New Age that acting on a tip-off they conducted a drive at the house of Lalon Uddin, brother of Gorgori union Awami League general secretary Arab Ali Sardar, and seized ten sacks of VGF rice.
He said each of sacks contained 50kg rice.
Upazila nirbahi officer Shahin Reza said that they filed a case with Bagha Police Station against Arab Ali Sardar and his brother Lalon Uddin on Saturday night.
