HC orders shut down of 340 sawmills in Pabna

The High Court Division on Thursday directed the government to immediately shut down 340 sawmills in Pabna as they were polluting the environment.
A bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal also asked the authorities to submit compliance report within 60 days.
The bench also directed the authorities to explain in four weeks why the operation of the sawmills at different areas in Pabna would not be declared illegal.
The court issued the order after hearing public interest litigation writ petition of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association.
