Two more suspected drug peddlers were killed in two separate incidents of ‘gunfights’ with police during anti-drug drives at two places in Mymensingh early Friday, police said.
The deceased were Ali Hossain, 38, son of Shahed Ali of Tarakanda upazila and Swapan Mia, 32, son of Abdul Kuddus of Trishal upazila.
With the duo, the death toll rises to 159 since May 15 during the ongoing countrywide anti-drug drive.
Until Friday, at least 28,373 suspected drug peddlers and addicts were arrested by the police and the Rapid Action Battalion, according to their accounts. The police began its drive on May 18 while RAB’s drive kicked off on May 4.
Meanwhile, Jatiya Party chief and special envoy to the prime minister, HM Ershad, alleged that the ‘drug kings’ were not caught in the ongoing anti-drug drives, New Age correspondent in Rangpur reported.
‘Only the small fishes are being killed,’ he said while talking to reporters at Rangpur Circuit House, though he added that he supported the drives as drugs were needed to be contained in the society.
The former military dictator said that he was not shocked at the deaths of those, who had destroyed the life of the youth by peddling drugs.
New Age correspondent in Mymensingh, quoting Trishal police station officer-in-charge Zakiur Rahman, reported that suspected drug peddler Swapan was killed in a gunfight with police near Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University under Trishal upazila around 4:00am.
Police also seized 200 Yaba tablets, 100 grams of heroin and machetes from the spot.
Mymensingh district detective branch of police officer-in-charge Ashiqur Rahman said that Ali Hossain, also named in at least 20 cases, was killed in ‘gunfight’ with detectives near an auto-rice mill on Tarakanda-Phulpur road at about 2:45am.
He said that police seized 200 Yaba tablets from the spot.
In the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police said they arrested 85 drug peddlers and addicts in anti-drug raids across the city in 24 hours ending Friday 6am, DMP officials said.
They said that during the drive DMP also seized 2,087 Yaba tablets, 800 grams of heroin, 7.2 kg of hemp, 20 litres of local liquor and 20 ampules of injectable drugs from their possession.
