The government has taken a plan to increase food grain storage capacity of Bangladesh to 270 lakh tonnes from the existing 21.2 lakh tonnes by the next two years, finance minister AMA Muthith said in his budget speech in Parliament on Thursday.
The minister said construction of a set of modern food warehouses or silos each with the capacity of 6.4 lakh tonnes would be completed by 2020.
‘Our goal is to ensure adequate supply of safe and nutritious food and to maintain adequate stock of food grains during emergency,’ Muhith said.
He said steps were taken to build eight modern steel silos with the capacity of 5.355 lakh tonnes in each of the eight strategic locations of the country.
The minister said steps were taken to ensure food security by undertaking capacity development projects and establishing testing laboratories for ‘Bangladesh Safe Food Authority’.
In addition, digital technology-based programmes were taken up to improve the monitoring and data management capacity of Food Ministry, he said.
Muhith said a food and nutrition policy was in the offing.
