Heavy rain disrupts Ctg city life

One and half hour’s torrential rain on Sunday afternoon sent many areas in Chittagong city, particularly the low-lying ones, under knee-deep water causing miseries to the city dwellers.
Severe traffic congestion, triggered by water-stagnation, inflicted immense sufferings on the commuters.
Besides, rickshaw pullers and CNG-auto drivers charging extra from the passengers amid torrential rain only added to their sufferings.
The commuters suffered most on roads at Bahaddarhat, Muradpur, Gate No-2, GEC circle, WASA Circle and Lalkhan Bazar, Agrabad, Halishahar, Patenga and Bakalia, Oxyzen Road, Bus Tarminal Road and Kalurghat amid severe traffic tangles.
Areas such as Sholoshahar, Muradpur, Chawkbazar, Katalganj Road, Agrabad Access Road and Commerce College were inundated.
Some important residential areas including CDA residential area, Sonali Bank Colony and Bohutola Colony, Chandgoan residential area, Arakan Housing Society also experienced inundation till afternoon.
The city commuters alleged that as the drains were clogged, water could not pass, which led to water stagnation.
Sayed Imran, a resident of the city’s Agrabad area, said he had to walk nearly one kilometre through dirty water to reach his residence near Commerce College from Agrabad.
Heavy rainfall continued from around 12:30pm till about 2:00pm.
Chittagong Patenga Met Office forecast officer Bishwajit Chowdhury told New Age that they recorded 22.00mm rainfall in the last 24 hours till 3:00pm.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Chittagong division during next 24 hours, Bishwajit added.
