Masked men shot dead regional political party United People’s Democratic Front’s organiser Mithun Chakma, 40, after abducting him from in front of his house in Khagrachari town Wednesday afternoon.
Bagis Chakma, younger brother of the victim, told reporters that masked men waylaid his brother as soon as he came out of his Aparna Chowdhury Para home around 12:30pm and abducted him at gunpoint.
The masked men came in two motorbikes and a three-wheeler ‘tom-tom’. They forced Mithun, organising secretary of UPDF’s Khagrachari chapter, to ride with them in one of the bikes and drove away, said Bagis.
The abductors took Mithun to Pankhaiyapara sluice gate area and shot him dead, said UPDF general secretary Rabi Shankar Chakma.
Later in a statement, Rabi Shankar alleged that the masked men were members of a ‘neo gang of criminals created by military’. He condemned the murder and termed it ‘an act of cowardice’.
He demanded immediate arrest of the killers and their punishment.
‘Mithun devoted his life fighting for full autonomy of the hill tracts. Hill people will remember his contribution in the movement against occupation of land,’ the statement quoted Rabi as saying.
Khagrachari Sadar police officer-in-charge Tarek Mohammad Abdul Hannan told reporters that the investigators had noticed at least six bullet holes in the body of Mithun during inquest.
An unnatural death case has been filed over the incident, said the OC.
Jatiya Mukti Council demonstrated in Dhaka protesting at the murder.
Mithun was also a former president of Pahari Chhatra Parishad and a former convenor of Ganatantrik Juba Forum.
