Chairman of superstore Agora, Niaz Rahim, was granted bail on Thursday evening, a few hours after he was sentenced to imprisonment for two years in two cases filed for selling adulterated ghee.
Special magistrate Mehedi Pavel Sweet of the Pure Food Court of Dhaka South City Corporation granted the bail on condition that he would appeal to the metropolitan session's judge court against the conviction, said DSCC officials.
Earlier in the day, special magistrate Md Mahbub Sobhani of the Pure Food Court sentenced Niaz to one-year imprisonment in each case after he was found guilty.
The court also fined him 50,000 in each case and sent him to jail. In case of failure to pay the fine, he will have to suffer one more month in prison.
Contacted, DSCC public relations officer Uttam Kumar Roy said that Niaz was convicted in the two cases filed in 2008.
Then Dhaka City Corporation health inspector Fakhruddin Mobarak seized substandard ghee from the Moghbazar outlet of the chain shop on August 18, 2008.
Two cases were lodged with the Pure Food Court of the city corporation after it was found in a lab test that the seized ghee was adulterated, he said, adding that the court framed charges against the Agora chairman on November 10, 2008.
