Saif Sporting Club chess team received money and felicitation from the club authorities on Thursday for their success in the recent Asian Chess Club Champions League held in Hikkaduwa Sri Lanka.
All five players of the team - GM Ziaur Rahman, GM Abdullah Al Rakib, GM Enamul Hossain Razib, IM Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagor and FM Taibur Rahman – received Tk 50,000 each for finishing as runners-up in the five-team event.
Saipa Chess Club of China became the Champions in the tournament that ended on Tuesday but the team from Bangladesh was impressive in their maiden appearance as they overhauled Australia, China and Sri Lankan clubs.
GM Rakib felt content with their achievement that, he said, would boost country’s chess.
‘I feel proud to represent Saif SC as well as Bangladesh in such league for the first time because such achievement in Bangladesh is really a rare one,’ said Rakib.
‘I think such achievement will show the paths to others in future. I hope the club will be continuing such tournament regularly,’ he added.
Saif’s officials also claimed that this sort of success would raise the interest in the game.
‘Our main purpose to form Saif SC is not only to make the club a reputed one by clinching the domestic title but also to win it internationally,’ said Saif SC managing director Nasiruddin Chowdhury.
‘I think this achievement has not only increased the image of our club but also increase the image of the country,’ he added.
Saif SC chairman Tarafder Mohammad Ruhul Amin and Bangladesh Chess Federation general secretary Syed Shahabuddin Shamim were also present in the occasion.
Saif became Premier Division Chess League champion in their maiden appearance last year.
