The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources Ministry on Tuesday recommended the government to re-excavate canals before rainy season under the projects of the annual development programmes to deal with flooding.
The parliamentary watchdog came up with the recommendation at its 29th meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad with its chairman Ramesh Chandra Sen in the chair, said a parliament secretariat handout.
The committee expressed satisfaction over the government’s measures taken to face the present flood situation in the country and thanked all the government authorities concerned.
It, however, suggested further enhancement of the government capacity to face the recurring floods.
The parliamentary committee asked the water resources ministry to form village-level and union-level associations and upazila-level federations for the maintenance of haor dams.
It also asked the ministry to monitor dredging activities of the dredging cell of Water Development Board.
Committee members state minister for Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Md Faridul Haque Khan, Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury, Anupom Shahjahan Joy and Selina Jahan Lita attended the meeting.
