WDB engineer withdrawn on corruption allegations

Water Development Board in Sunamganj executive engineer was withdrawn on Saturday on allegation of corruption in the construction and repair of the embankment surrounding the haor areas.
Active chief engineer in Sylhet Abdul Hai confirmed that executive engineer Afsar Uddin was withdrawn from Sunamganj two days after the Anti-Corruption Commission started investigation into the corruption allegation against him.
The commission on Thursday formed a three-member probe committee to investigate alleged corruption in the construction of the haor embankment.
At the end of March, Boro crop of hundreds of acres of land in Sunamganj haor area were submerged by flash flood breaking the haor protection embankment few days before the harvest. Several lakh farmers lost their crop for the flash flood.
The local people following the incident alleged huge irregularities against the engineer and some construction farm in building and repairing the embankment.
Water resources ministry and the board formed another probe committee to investigate the matter.
