Road Transport and Highways Division has asked the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited to inform it about the quality of the bearing pads to be used in the under construction metro rail project in the capital as two of the samples were found not up to the mark.
Bearing pad is used to construct bridges to ensure flexibility. These pads are being placed in the connection point of the piers and the structures above the piers, according to officials concerned.
These materials are being provided by the contractor company Ital-Thai Development Private Company Limited which has poor safety records in past, the officials said.
Recently Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology’s civil engineering department tested some bearing pads brought by Ital-Thai for using on the under construction rail.
Two of the samples did not pass the test, said a professor of the department, seeking anonymity.
Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited is implementing the 20.1-kilometre elevated rail service Mass Rapid Transit Line -6, popularly known as metro rail, under the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project.
The route of the service will follow Uttara Phase 3–Pallabi–Rokeya Sarani–Khamarbari–Farmgate–Karwanbazar–Shahbagh–TSC–Doyel Chattar–Topkhana Road–Bangladesh Bank route to carry 60,000 passengers per hour from both the ends.
Metro rail is being implementing under eight packages – land development at depot areas (package 1), civil works at depot areas (package 2), construction of viaduct and stations between Uttara north and Agargaon (package 3 and 4), construction of viaduct and stations between Agargaon and Karwan Bazar (package 5), construction of viaduct and stations between Karwan Bazar and Motijheel (package 6), electrical and mechanical system (package 7) and collection of rail coaches and depot equipment (package 8).
Currently Ital-Thai Development Private Company Limited is implementing packages 3 and 4.
The Road Transport and Highways Division on January 7 called a meeting on the allocation of revised annual development for the project and the issue of bearing pads also came in discussion. The meeting was told that that some samples of bearing pads did not pass the test at BUET.
From the meeting, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited was asked to give more information about the test and what actions were taken against the contractor company for delay due to difficulties over supplying sub-standard bearing pads.
The division additional secretary (development) Chandan Kumar Dey, who presided over the January 7 meeting, told New Age on Wednesday that they were yet to get any reply from the company.
A criminal case was filed by the Thai labour ministry against Ital-Thai in May, 2017 after a steel structure fell off a pillar on the Wat Don Muang School killing three workers on April 28 same year.
Ital-Thai is also conducting Dhaka Elevated Expressway project.
