Bangladesh national hockey team will leave for Europe today to take part in nine practice matches against Poland and Austria as part of their preparation for 5th Men’s AHF Cup, scheduled from November 19-27 in Hong Kong.
In the absence of national coach Oliver Kurtz, local coach Mahbub Harun and Bangladesh Hockey
Ehsan Rana and Ariful Islam Prince will accompany the squad during their nearly three weeks stay there.
Among the 19-member squad, nine players, who are currently plying club hockey in Germany, will join the team in Poland.
Bangladesh team will play six practice matches against Poland national team from October 19 to October 26 before heading to Austria to play another three matches from October 27 to 30, said BHF vice-president Saifullah Al Munir during a press conference on Monday.
Though the AHF Cup will be held in the warmer weather of Hong Kong, organising the practice matches in the chilly conditions of Europe have raised few questions.
‘It was my promise to send the national team in Europe for the preparation’, said Munir.
‘Besides, hockey is now a game based on more technology and there are some technological loopholes in our team,’ he said.
‘So, we want the players to learn those techniques and technology from the German coaching staff we have appointed.’
After the practice matches, the squad is supposed to return to Dhaka on November 6 and they will have a 10-day preparation before leaving for Hong Kong.
