The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday said that they would compel the government to hold a new election under a neutral government and an impartial election commission by scrapping the result of the 11th national election.

This goal would be attained through a movement involving the country’s people, they added.

Party secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir warned of the movement after a meeting of the party standing committee at its chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka in the evening.

The party’s highest policymaking body met hours after party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s bail plea was rejected by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

Following the apex court’s decision, BNP leaders and activists in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country staged impromptu demonstration.

Fakhrul said that Khaleda was denied justice and that the party was aggrieved at the apex court’s Thursday decision.

He announced that BNP would hold a countrywide demonstration on Sunday for Khaleda’s release.

He said that the government weakened the judiciary, grabbed the administration and was creating pressure on the media.

The BNP leader said that the government, by scrapping the caretaker government system through the 15th amendment to the constitution, threw the country into a permanent conflicting situation.

Alleging that lodging cases was one of the government’s big weapons, he said that it remained in power by lodging false cases and having grabbed the administration.

Earlier, immediately after the SC decision, party leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi led a procession of the BNP and its front organisations in the capital’s Bangla Motor area

BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal brought out a procession on the Dhaka University campus protesting against the SC order and demanding Khaleda’s release, our DU correspondent reported.

The party’s youth front Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal brought out a procession at Kamlapur in the city demanding Khaleda’s release. Organisation president Saiful Alam Nirab and general secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku led the procession.

BNP’s volunteer front, Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal brought out a procession in the Mouchak area. President Shafiul Bari Babu and general secretary Abdul Quadir Bhuiyan Jewel of the organisation led the procession.

Reports received from Khulna, Rajshahi, Bogura, Feni and Sylhet said that the BNP and its front organisations brought out similar protest processions in the divisional cities and district towns.
