Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday staged countrywide demonstrations demanding immediate release of imprisoned and ailing party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

The party on Sunday announced the demonstration against the backdrop of the Appellate Division’s Thursday deferment of Khaleda’s bail hearing to December 12 and attacks on BNP demonstrations at places on the day.

Khaleda has been in jail since February 8, 2018, the day she was convicted by a special court in Dhaka in a graft case which BNP termed false and fabricated. She is now under treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

Addressing rallies and meetings across the country on Sunday, BNP leaders alleged Khaleda was still in jail for the government’s political vengeance and the government was implementing their plot to kill Khaleda in jail by depriving her of proper treatment.

In Dhaka, police dispersed BNP leaders and activists by chasing a procession brought out jointly by Shahbagh, Ramna, Motijheel and Paltan thana units near the party central office at Naya Paltan in the morning.

Police also kept the leaders and activists of BNP in the party central office for hours by cordoning in front of the office, a press release issued by Dhaka South City unit of BNP.

It also alleged that police picked up at least three activists from the area while they had been taking preparations to bring out the procession.

Reports received from elsewhere said rallies were held peacefully.
