Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh, a pro Bangladesh Nationalist Party organisation of physicians, on Tuesday alleged that the imprisoned BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia was seriously ill.
Addressing a press conference at capital’s National Press Club on health condition of Khaleda, DAB’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University unit general secretary Sheikh Farhad said the BSMMU authorities were killing time in the name of further tests which was against the country’s basic rights and violation of human rights.
‘This is a trick to throw Khaleda Zia towards the risk of death,’ he alleged.
He demanded to the government to arrange her treatment by her personal physicians and at a hospital of her choice by granting her bail she deserved before her health condition turns critical.
If otherwise, he warned for tough movement by the physicians for her release.
Khaleda is in jail since February 8, 2018, the day she was convicted in a graft case which BNP terming false, fabricated and motivates. She was admitted to BSMMU on April 1 and she had been undergoing treatment there since then.
The Appellate Division is scheduled to hear her bail application on Thursday when BSMMU is scheduled to submit its medical reports on Khaleda. BSMMU on December 5, without submitting the report, prayed time to SC for submitting reports.
Farhad alleged influential people in the government had been making confusing remarks on Khaleda’s health.
On October 28, BSMMU authorities in a press conference presented untrue and conflicting information on Khaleda’s health to kill her gradually, he said.
He said Khaleda was seriously ill and gradually advancing towards permanent physical disability and, if she was not provided with proper treatment right now, the problem might take a permanent turn.
‘But BSMMU authorities, on the government’s ill direction, hid the truth in a bid to confuse the nation and hinder her bail she deserved,’ he said.
In the October 28 press conference, BSMMU hospital director said Khaleda was not cooperating them in her treatment while the medical board head said they were happy with her treatment there and Khaleda speaks to them with smiling face and cooperate them, mentioned Farhad.
He said there was no reason of not submitting medical report of a patient.
‘To our knowledge, the medical board on Khaleda Zia submitted her medical reports to the BSMMU vice-chancellor twice. Even though, the deshnetri was thrown to health risk by killing time in the name of further tests,’ he alleged.
DAB adviser Md Shahidur Rahman, vice-president Helal Uddin, joint-secretary general Kazi Mazharul Islam Dolon and BSMMU unit president Erfanul Haque Siddique, among others, were present.
