Police on Sunday night prosecuted 190 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its affiliated organisations over BNP’s clash with police and ruling Awami League activists on the day.
Sirajganj sadar police sub-inspector Joydev Kumar filed a case against the BNP men for ‘obstructing police from discharging their duty, harming life and asset of public and beating up police personnel,’ said inspector Tariqul Islam of the police station.
At least 35 leaders and activists of BNP and Awami League and five police personnel were injured in a clash on Kalibari-Eliotganj bridge road in Sirajganj town on Sunday while BNP’s Sirajganj district office was torched reportedly by AL activists.
BNP on Sunday staged countrywide demonstration demanding release of its chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail. Sirajganj BNP and its associated organisations staged demo before the clash.
Sirajganj police so far arrested six leaders and activists of BNP and its associated organisations over the Sunday’s incident, said inspector Tariqul.
The arrestees – Idlu Sheikh, Tipu Sultan, Anwar Hossain, Shuvo Sheikh, Biplab Sheikh and Sohel Rana – were sent to jail on Monday after they were produced in a Sirajganj court.
Inspector Tariqul said they filed the case against only BNP men as it were the BNP activists who attacked the police and AL men.
The accused include Sirajganj district unit BNP general secretary Saidur Rahman Bachchu, joint secretary Rashedul Hasan Ranjan, organising secretary Mirza Mostafa Zaman, joint organising secretary Abu Sayeed Sweet, Sirajganj municipality unit BNP president Nazmul Hasan Talukder Rana, Sirajganj sadar unit BNP general secretary Amor Krishna Das.
