High Court upholds death penalty of one in Atiq murder

The High Court on Sunday upheld the death sentence of one and life imprisonment of two others in a case lodged over murder of NTV journalist Atiqul Islam Atiq.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Shahidul Karim and Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman passed the order after holding hearing on jail appeals and death reference in the case.

The court on Sunday upheld death sentence of Shakil Shikder and life imprisonment of Abdullah Md Ibne Ali Sarker alias Nahid and Md Forkan.

According to the case documents, a group of people shot and killed Atiq in Moghbazar Rail Crossing area on February 13, 2009. The victim’s brother Abu Bakar Siddique filed the case with Ramna Police Station the next day.

Police filed charge sheet in the case on August 9, 2009 and the lower court concerned on October 6, 2010, framed charges against four accused in the case.

Dhaka 2nd Speedy Trial Tribunal on June 24, 2014, passed the judgement in the case, sentencing one to death, life imprisonment to two and three-year jail to another one.
