CRP, Oprajita win wheelchair basketball titles

Athletes with disabilities got an opportunity to display their enthusiasm in the maiden edition of the Wheelchair Basketball tournament which ended at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed ground in Savar on Thursday.

CRP team emerged champion in the men’s competition while Oprajita team clinched the women’s title. CRP defeated SCIDAP by 32-27 points while Oprajita beat Oporajoy Onnonna by 14-08 points in the finals.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, CRP and Bangladesh Basketball Foundation jointly organiesd the five-day long tournament to promote wheelchair basketball and to mark this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities under the theme of ‘The Future is Accessible.’

Jatiya Sangsad speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury attended the closing ceremony as chief.

‘Differently able people are our family members, part of the society and the citizens of Bangladesh. They have same rights like you and me, the right to work, the right to earn and the right to live a fulfilled life,’ said the speaker in her speech.

CRP founder Valerie Taylor, ICRC Head of Bangladesh delegation Pierre Dorbes were also present on the occasion among other dignitaries.
