Music show pays tribute to Salil Chowdhury

Cultural troupe Jaltaranga paid tribute to late legendary Indian music director, lyricist, writer and poet Salil Chowdhury organising a music show titled ‘Prithibir Garita Thamao’ at Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium of Sufia Kamal National Public Library on Friday.

The programme was organised marking the 94th birth anniversary of Salil Chowdhury, who was born on 19 November 1925 in Gazipur, South 24 Parganas of Bengal Presidency in British India.

Salil Chowdhury made his debut as a music composer with the film named Paribortan, which was released in 1949. He later entered into the Hindi film industry in 1953. He directed music for the film named ‘Do Bigha Zamin’ which was based on Tagore’s poem by the same name. He also worked in Malayalam film industry. He composed songs in over 13 languages in his long career. He died on September 5, 1995 in Kolkata.

Artistes of the organisation paid tribute to Salil Chowdhury rendering his popular songs. Besides, three poems penned by Salil were recited at the show.

The programme commenced with the song Ei roko prithibir garita thamao playing in the background.

Following which, artistes rendered the song Ayre o ayre bhaire o bhaire. Besides, the artistes rendered songs like Gouri sringa tuleche shir, Suhana safar, Ami jhorer kache rekhe, Ranar chuteche tai and others.

In solos, Mukta Mandal sang Jhunjhun mayna nacho na, Jishu Ram Sushil sang Ar deri noy jago bhai, Tanvira Ashraf Shyama sang Ae Dil Kahan, Jakir Hasan Tapan rendered Ekdin phire jabo chole, Lipika Taposhi rendered Ay brishty jhepe, Besides, Shukla Dey, Shefat Alam Aditi, Shantanu Saha Roy and others performed at the event.

In duet, Nasrin Akter and Jakir Sumon sang Aaj noy gungun gunjan premer, Ranjit Roy Ranju and Parvin Yeasmin rendered Amay proshno kore nil dhrubotara, Shamim Aminur Rahman and Suchina Nahid Salam presented Poth harabo bolei ebar and Enakshi Saha Roy and Alpana Banerjee sang Prantorer gan amar.

The artistes were accompanied by Robin on keyboard, Nasir Uddin on guitar, Vuludhar Rajesh on tabla, Mithun Bairagi on flute, Pradip Karmaker on octapad and Shahjahan on dhol.

Shapna Chowdhury Nandi and Bandana Banerjee recited poems by Salil Chowdhury.

Jaltaranga was founded in 2014. The organisation regularly arranges music shows to promote works of legendary musicians and singers among the masses.

‘We organised the show to observe the birth anniversary of Salil Chowdhury. I hope the audience found the show entertaining,’ said Masuda Khan, president of the Jaltaranga.
