Bangladesh Nationalist Party will stage countrywide demonstrations today demanding immediate release of ailing imprisoned party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia from jail.
The party, in a press conference on Tuesday, announced the demonstration in all the cities and district towns. The demonstration in Dhaka will be held in front of the party central office at capital’s Naya Paltan at 2:00pm.
Khaleda has been in jail since February 8, 2018, the day when she was convicted in a graft case that BNP terms false and fabricated. She had been undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University since April 1.
On Friday, BNP and its fronts brought out a procession from the party central office and ended in a roadside meeting at the same place to press home the same demand.
Addressing the meeting, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the government had kept BNP chairperson confined in a bid to supress the opposition political forces’ activities and views to hide their failure.
He alleged the government, out of political vengeance, had been pushing Khaleda Zia towards death by creating obstacles in her treatment and obstructing her bail she deserved by interfering on court.
Rizvi alleged the government’s failure had resulted in uncontrolled market price of daily essential commodities and that the footsteps of famine could be heard in the country now.
He said the government could not control markets though the prime minister and different other ministers made separate comments over the issue.
