Today is 67th birthday of Independence Award winning singer Runa Laila.
Runa Laila was born on November 17, 1952 to Emdad Ali and Amina Laila in Sylhet. She started her musical training at the age of six in Karachi.
Runa won the interschool music competition when she was only nine years old. She had a brief training in dance at a tender age, so she used to sing and dance at the same time on stage. She used to host her own show at PTV named Bazm-E-Lail.
Runa Laila can sing songs in 18 languages including Bangla, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Gujrati, English Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French and others. In her long singing career she has rendered playbacks for Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi films.
She has sung and recorded over 10,000 songs. Her name is included in the Guinness World Records for recording 30 songs within 3 days.
She has lent her voice for hit films like Kayamat Theke Kayamat Porjonto, Beder Meye Josna, Dui Jibon, Agneepath, Jaan-e-Bahaar, Sapnon Ka Mandir, Man Ki Jeet and others.
She has also rendered famous patriotic songs like Protidin tomay dekhi, Swadhinata ek golap photano din, Bhashar janya jara diye gechhey pran and others which are still evergreen.
Runa Laila has received around 300 awards in various countries including Saigal Award in India, Nigar Award (twice) and Kalakaar Award in Pakistan and National Film Award in Bangladesh seven times in 1976, 1977, 1989, 1992, 2012, 2014 and 2018.
