Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said that the people behind the abnormal hike of onion price should be detected.

She was inaugurating the third national council of the Awami Swechchhasebak League, an associate body of the ruling Awami League, at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.

Hasina, also the AL president, said that the onions being imported by cargo planes would be landing in a day or two.

‘We want to see who are involved in the sudden abnormal hike of onion price though generally prices of some commodities change following weather condition,’ she said.

The PM made the statement after the essential commodity price hit Tk250 a kilogram in the local market the previous day.

She resented that there was a quarter that always tried to create issues while the country was going forward.

The cargo planes with onions are expected to arrive in a day or two as part of efforts to contain the item’s abnormal price hike while the government has planned as well to find out what actually caused the situation.

‘I expect the cargo planes carrying onions to reach the country by tomorrow or the day after tomorrow [Sunday or Monday],’ she said.

Hasina said that a situation was created in the country over onion ‘but I don’t know why its price is jumping abnormally’.

She, however, said that though the price of this essential cooking ingredient spiralled in many other countries but its abnormal price hike in Bangladesh needed to be examined.

‘So we have to see whether anybody is involved in any plot,’ she said.

She said that being a perishable commodity onion could not be preserved for a long time which could be one of the reasons for the price spiral.

‘So, anybody who wants to earn some money by hoarding and increasing the price of onion, they will have to think that it’s a perishable commodity,’ she observed.

About the ongoing drive against corruption and other irregularities, she said that it would continue in order to ensure peace and security for the people of Bangladesh.

Hasina went on that the people of the country would no more tolerate leading luxurious life by anybody with money earned in dishonest ways like graft, extortion and terrorism.

AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, organising secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, ASL council preparation committee convenor Nirmal Ranjan Guha also spoke in the programme.
