A speech-impaired youth was killed and seven were injured in an attack over a rape attempt in Boishnabpur area of Brahmanbaria on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 20, son of Mohammad Ali of village Boishnabpur under Basudeb union.
The injured were Md Ashek Miah, 23, son of Siraj Miah, Mohammad Ali, 70, son of Ayat Ali, Jahangir Miah, 30, son of Mohammad Ali, Rokeya Begum, 50, wife of Mohammad Ali, Siraj Miah, 55, son of Ayat Ali, Ahammad Ali, 65, son of Ayat Ali, Champa begum, 35, wife of Joro Miah, residents of Boishnabpur.
They were admitted to the Brahmanbaria General Hospital. Three of them were in critical condition, according to attending doctors.
Witnesses and the victim’s family said that local young man Imam Hossain, 25, entered neighbouring Rubel Miah’s house and tried to rape his wife when Rubel Miha was in bathroom.
Hearing her scream, Rubel Miah and his cousins came and caught Imam Hossain red handed.
Being informed, Imam Hossain’s relatives attacked Rubel’s house with locally made sharp weapons, leaving Rubel’s cousin Shafiqul Islam critically injured. Later his relatives took him to Brahmanbaria hospital where the doctor declared him dead.
Brahmanbaria sadar police station inspector (operation) Md Selim said police was deployed at Boishnabpur after the incident and the situation was now normal.
