A Juba League leader was killed and four others sustained injuries in a factional clash of ruling Awami League in Rajshahi city on Wednesday over controlling tender distribution at Rajshahi Railway Station.

The deceased was identified as Sanowar Hossain Rasel, son of late Babul Kashem of Bastuhara area in the city.

Rajshahi railway sources said the western railway authority had recently invited tenders for buying several equipment and other necessary things for the railway. Wednesday was scheduled time for opening the tender boxes.

Local Awami League and railway sources said the incumbent councillor and Awami League’s Rajshahi metropolitan unit member Nizamul Azim allegedly controlled most of the western railway tenders distribution.

On Wednesday noon, a group of Awami League activists led by Sainik League Rajshahi metropolitan unit general secretary Sujon Ali locked in an altercation with Anowar Hossain Raza, organising secretary of Boalia thana unit Awami League, and his cohorts beside the western railway equipment superintendent’s office.

At one stage, the groups locked in a clash leaving at least five activists including Rasel and his brother Anowasr Hossain Raza injured.

Later the five injured  were rushed to Rajshahi Medical Collage Hospital where Rasel succumbed to his injuries.

Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Chandrima police station, told New Age that a Juba League was killed following a fictional clash between two groups over tendering at Railway Building.

‘Filling of a case was under process in this connection, he added. Rasel’s body would be handed over to family after autopsy, he said.

Meanwhile, Western Railway chief equipment controller Belal Uddin told New Age the tender process was held in a fair environment. ‘We have heard that the incident happened outside our office. There is no connection between the tender process and the clash’, he added.
