Police in Pabna detained a surgeon and his assistant after they attempted to flee leaving a critical patient in operation theatre at Chatmohar of the district on Monday night.
The patient later died at Pabna Medical College Hospital.
Chatmohar police rushed to Chatmohar Islamic Hospital on information that locals caught two doctors and beat up them when they were attempting to flee the clinic and detained the duo.
Chatmohar police station officer-in-charge Sheikh Nasir Uddin said Taslima Khatun, 35, wife of Ismail Hossain of village Bothor in Chatmohar, was admitted to Chatmohar Islamic Hospital on Monday afternoon with labour pain.
After her admission, the surgeon of the clinic Saddam Hossain, his assistant Md Asaduzzaman and clinic owner Amir Hossain Bablu and two other nurses took Taslima to operation theatre for caesarean section. Taslima gave birth to a girl child but her condition turned critical due to excessive bleeding, said Nasir Uddin.
The family members alleged as the patient turned critical, the doctor and his fellows tried to flee the clinic leaving the patient in the operation theatre, he said adding, angry locals caught Saddam and Azaduzzman but the clinic owner Amir Hossain Bablu managed to flee.
Chatmohar upazila health complex resident medical officer Baizid-Ul-Islam said hearing the news he rushed to the clinic and found the patient in critical condition for excessive bleeding. ‘She was immediately taken to Pabna Medical College Hospital where she died at about 9:30pm,’ said Baizid-Ul-Islam.
Pabna civil surgeon Iqbal Mahmud said they sealed off the clinic Monday night through mobile court. Preparations were on to file cases against the owners and doctors of the clinic, he said.
Locals said the clinic was running without meeting required conditions.
On July 3, another mobile court raided the clinic and sealed it off for conducting surgeries without having any anesthesiologist. The owners were also fined then.
Recently, the owners reopened the clinic with the help of surgeon Saddam Hossain, said locals.
Detained Saddam and Asaduzzman were kept in Chatmohar police station till Tuesday afternoon.
OC Sheikh Nasir Uddin said no case was filed in connection with the incident. The detainees would be shown arrested after recording the case, the OC added.
