Protesting Rajshahi University teachers on Thursday vowed that they would force vice‑chancellor M Abdus Sobhan and pro-vice chancellor Chowdhury M Zakaria to resign if any appointment was made as per the existing teachers’ recruitment policy.
They said this at a human chain in front of Tajuddin Ahmed Senate Building at 11:00am protesting against corruption and irregularities at the university.
Addressing the human chain, geology and mining department professor Sultan-Ul-Islam said RU had a standard recruitment policy for appointing teachers, officers, and employees and most of these rules are approved by the University Grants Commission and the education ministry.
‘While the experts were raising voice to raise the conditions of recruitments, RU relaxed the conditions to appoint their relatives, turning the university into a place to nurture nepotism,’ he added.
The vice-chancellor relaxed the conditions only to recruit her daughter and son-in-law as teachers who cut poor figures in exams: his daughter stood 22nd, and her husband 63rd in their undergraduate examinations, the complained.
‘We warn that if these types of recruitment continue, you have to step down from your chair. None will be spared doing irregularities, oppression and teachers-trade on the campus,’ he said.
Management professor Sayed Muhammad Ali Reza said, ‘The autocracy, oppression, corruption, and nepotism have grasped the university. The recruitment processes of the university have been taken to a point where none but the people with huge amount of money will be appointed’.
Among others, Bangla professor Safiqunnabi Samadi, geography and environment professor Mizanur Rahman, genetic and engineering technology professor Shahriar Jaman, psychology professor Mujibul Haque Azad Khan, electrical and electronics engineering professor Mamunur Rashid Talukdar, political science professor SM Akram Ullah addressed the human chain.
