The cabinet on Monday gave the final approval to the draft Gazipur Development Authority Bill 2019 to develop the district town near the Dhaka city in a planned way.

The housing and public works ministry placed the draft in the weekly cabinet meeting with prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at her Tejgaon office.

‘The GDA would be similar to Chattogram Development Authority, Khulna Development Authority and Rajshahi Development Authority,’ outgoing cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said in a press briefing later at the secretariat.

The GDA would have a 22-member board to be led by a chairman who would be appointed for a three-year term.

The board would be responsible for formulating a mega-plan for Gazipur city and its adjacent areas and give approval to housing projects, the cabinet secretary said.

Shafiul said the cabinet meeting also endorsed a list of 22 public holidays for 2020. ‘As per the list, 14 days will be general holidays and eight holidays will be fixed by executive order.’

Eight days of the 22 holidays fall on the weekends. Muslims and Buddhists will get five optional holidays each while Hindus and Christians would get eight optional holidays each, he said, adding that the ethnic minorities living in Chattogram Hill Tracts would get two optional holidays.

The cabinet also approved the draft ‘Agreement between the Government of the Republic of South Africa and the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh regarding the waiver of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and official passports,’ he said.

With the approval of the agreement, holders of diplomatic and official passports of both the countries would not require visas to visit the countries.

Shafiul said that the cabinet also greeted him as this was his last office day as cabinet secretary.

He said he was going to join the World Bank in Washington DC as alternate executive director on November 1 for a three-year term.
