The government on Monday again instructed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to resolve the issue regarding its audit claims to two telecom operators through discussion amid cases over the issue pending with different courts.

The government instructed the BTRC to form an independent committee comprising legal and accounting experts to reach a conclusion over the Tk 13,446 crore audit claims made to the largest telecom operator GP and the second largest operator Robi.

The decision came from a meeting presided over by prime minister’s ICT affairs adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy at Ganabhaban in capital Dhaka.

Posts and telecommunications minister Mustafa Jabbar, BTRC chairman Md Jahurul Haque, its commissioners and senior officials were present at the meeting.

Earlier on September 18, finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, after a meeting with the telecommunications minister Mustafa Jabbar, National Board of Revenue chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan and Grameenphone chief executive officer Michael Patrick Foley, had expected that the dispute would be settled mutually through discussion.

‘The meeting discussed the developments on the recovery of the audit claims from GP and Robi and decided to form a committee to reach a solution to the issue,’ a meeting source said.

‘We have adopted some decisions over the government’s audit claims to GP and Robi,’ Mustafa Jabbar said.

The decisions, however, could not be disclosed until the implementation process is completed, he said.

So far, the government has taken a number of steps by the way of imposing regulatory sanctions to realise the audit claims from GP and Robi.

Meanwhile, the HC on October 17 issued a stay order on any government’s move to realise audit claims from GP.

In August this year, the mobile phone operators filed lawsuits with the Joint District Judge Court challenging legality of the regulator’s claims.

The government has recently initiated a move to appoint administrators to GP and Robi.
