Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar on Sunday said the country’s election process was not devoid of corruption.
He said the public representatives elected through illegal methods or by means of corruption did not have the legality of their election.
The commissioner made the remarks in a workshop on voter list update at the Election Training Institute at Agargaon in the capital.
Mahbub said the illegal public representatives did not have the responsibility and accountability to the people.
‘Democracy could not be strengthened and protected properly in this manner,’ he said.
Mahbub said every nation tried to establish democracy through free and fair elections. A nation without democracy does not have any dignity, according to the election commissioner.
Terming the allegation of corruption of election secretariat and field-level officers unfortunate, he said the nation always expected a corruption-free and transparent Election Commission.
He said utmost caution should be maintained so that Rohingyas were not enlisted in the voters’ list.
He said stern action would be taken against the election officials if found involved in listing Rohingyas as voters.
