Five cops were withdrawn from to a police investigation centre at Bhendamari of Pirganj in Rangpur on Wednesday after 25 people were injured as police charged batons and fired gunshots to disperse villagers protesting at the death of a man in custody.

Police rejected the allegation of torturing the man to death rather suspected it as ‘suicide’. They withdrew five police personnel, including inspector Aminul Islam, and formed a three-member probe committee led by Rangpur additional superintendent of police  Abu Mohammad Maruf Hossain asked it to submit report in three working days.

Local people said police detained Samsul Alam, 55, of Shantipur in Mithapukur around 9:00pm on Tuesday from Baradaroga Bazar in Pirganj. His body was found hanging from the grill of a window at Bhendamari police investigation centre on Wednesday morning.

Pirganj police officer-in- charge Saresh Chandra said police detained a drug peddler Samsul Alam with 25 litres of locally made liquor on Tuesday night and he committed suicide on Wednesday morning at the police investigation centre.

Shamsul’s daughter Satana said her father was a cattle trader and never peddled liquor.

She also said after detaining her father, the police personnel demanded Tk one lakh and he refused to pay it. ‘They tortured him whole the night to death at the investigation centre,’ she alleged.

Rangpur superintendent of police Biplob Kumar Sarker said police found the body of the man hanging from the window grill around 9:30am on Wednesday. ‘We primarily suspect it was an act of suicide,’ he said.

Biplab Kumar rejected the allegation of torturing him in custody. ‘There was no mark of injuries on the body.’

As the news of Shamsul’s death at the police investigation centre spread, villagers got agitated and several hundred of them laid siege to the centre at Bhendamari demanding arrest of people responsible for the death.

At one stage, police charged batons and fired some blank shots to disperse the agitated mob leaving at least 25 people injured.

Of the injured, two were admitted to Pirganj upazilla health complex.
